According to Variety (link) 20th Century Fox has signed a deal with Neil Blomkamp to direct a new Alien movie! He showed a picture of one of the orignal H.R. Giger paintings on Instagram saying “Um… So I think it’s officially my next film. #alien”.
Inside sources said that the movie would take place years after the events in Prometheus and that Ridley Scott’s production company, Scott Free, would be producing the new Alien movie as well as Prometheus 2 which is currently in production. It is currently unclear whether Sigourney Weaver is attached to the project.
Previously we had written about the idea of a new Alien movie based on the concept art that director Neil Blomkamp released (link). Personally I am very excited about the idea of a new Alien movie and the idea of an older Ripley and Hicks from Aliens taking on the Weyland Utani Corporation. To be totally honest I am uncertain if I would want a new Alien movie with Ripley again even though I agree with Sigourney that it feels that Ripley didn’t get a proper send off. Unfortunately I feel the franchise needs some new blood – someone else to carry the flamethrower and the pulse rifle of the series – and then also a new series of movies. I am curious how the series will work with it set a few years after the first Prometheus movie. It would be interesting to see if they use some of the story ideas set forth in the Prometheus Fire and Stone comic series.
So what is your opinion? We would love to hear it.
