Stardust (2007)
The original book, Stardust by Neil Gaiman (first published in 1998), follows the adventures of Tristran Thorn, a young man from the village of Wall, which borders the magical land of Faerie. In essence, the film, which was released in 2007, follows the same story. The film stars Charlie Cox, Ben Barnes, Michelle Pfeiffer, Claire Danes, Sienna Miller, Mark Strong, Jason Flemyng, Rupert Everett, Ricky Gervais, David Walliams, Nathaniel Parker, Peter O’Toole, David Kelly, Robert De Niro, Julian Rhind-Tutt, Mark Heap, and Henry Cavill and is based on Neil Gaiman’s novel Stardust. Ever After: A Cinderella Story (1998)
Ever After (also known as Ever After: A Cinderella Story in promotional materials) is a 1998 American romantic comedy-drama film directed by Andy Tennant and starring Drew Barrymore, Anjelica Huston, and Dougray Scott. Danielle, the sole daughter of a deceased French nobleman, is raised as a servant rather than a stepdaughter by cruel and snobbish Rodmilla, along with her own two daughters Marguerite and Jacqueline. She meets Prince Henry, the future King of France, by chance one day. Danielle later has to pretend to be a noblewoman and meets the prince again. His interest in the young lady grows this time. However, the prince’s wedding day approaches with no official bride in sight. In fact, her stepsister Marguerite appears to have the best chance of winning the race. They all, however, underestimated the power of true love, especially when a genius is present.
Beauty and the Beast (1991)
An arrogant young prince (Robby Benson) and his castle’s servants fall victim to a wicked enchantress’s spell, which transforms him into the hideous Beast until he learns to love and be loved in return. After the Beast imprisons her father Maurice, the spirited, headstrong village girl Belle (Paige O’Hara) enters the Beast’s castle (Rex Everhart). Belle begins to draw the cold-hearted Beast out of his isolation with the help of his enchanted servants, including the matronly Mrs. Potts (Angela Lansbury).
- Edward Scissorhands (1990)
This is a modern-day fairy tale about Edward, a man created by an old inventor who died before completing him and left him with scissors instead of hands. Edward is adopted by a suburban family and falls in love with Kim, their adolescent daughter. He must adjust to a new life and environment that he is unfamiliar with. Penelope (2006)
Penelope is a 2006 fantasy romantic comedy film directed by Mark Palansky and starring Christina Ricci, James McAvoy, Catherine O’Hara, Peter Dinklage, Richard E. Grant, and Reese Witherspoon. The plot of this contemporary love story, Penelope, revolves around a young girl’s inspirational journey, a sinister family secret, and the strength of love. Penelope must discover true love with “one of her own type” and learn the most crucial lesson of her life—”I like myself the way I am”—against all odds in order to break the family curse. Born to wealthy socialites, Penelope Wilhern suffers from the Wilhern curse, which can only be undone when she finds love. The lonely girl encounters a number of suitors while hiding out on her family’s estate while her parents try in vain to dispel the curse. Until Penelope’s curse is exposed, every eligible bachelor is infatuated with her and her huge dowry. Max is hired by Lemon, a cheeky and eager tabloid writer, to pose as a potential suitor in order to capture a picture of the elusive Penelope. The charming down-on-his-luck gambler finds himself falling for Penelope, but he doesn’t want to let her down or let her know about his shady dealings, so he plans to vanish. Penelope leaves her family and sets out on her own, fed up with his most recent betrayal and resolved to experience life on her terms. She meets her first friend, Annie, discovers adventure, and develops into the person she was meant to be.
