There are some kids movies who are seriously scary! For the next few posts, we will be discussing our top 5 really scary kids movies.

We start with Coraline.

(1) Coraline (2009)

Coraline_poster NerdipopCoraline is a 2009 American stop-motion animated 3D dark fantasy film based on Neil Gaiman’s 2002 novel of the same name. It was produced by Laika and distributed by Focus Features. The film depicts an adventurous girl finding an idealized parallel world behind a secret door in her new home, unaware that the alternate world contains a dark and sinister secret. Written and directed by Henry Selick, the film was made with Gaiman’s approval and cooperation.

Synopsis:

When Coraline moves to an old house, she feels bored and neglected by her parents. She finds a hidden door with a bricked up passage. During the night, she crosses the passage and finds a parallel world where everybody has buttons instead of eyes, with caring parents and all her dreams coming true.

At one hour and forty minutes long, this is the longest stop-motion film to date.

Coraline--01 NerdipopTo construct 1 puppet of Coraline, 10 individuals had to work 3-4 months.

Coraline--02 NerdipopMany people have tried to decipher the meanings behind the lyrics of the haunting soundtrack to Coraline. In truth, although it sounds like some strange language, it is just a lot of gibberish words that really mean nothing. On a side note, one of the singers in the choir that sang the gibberish words was named Coraline, although she had no connection to the character or book.

Coraline--03 Nerdipop1,300 square feet of fake fur was applied to stand in for live and/or dead grass.

Coraline--04 NerdipopCoraline has also been made into a stage musical, produced by MCC Theater in New York, with music and lyrics by Stephin Merritt of The Magnetic Fields.
