Movies for Christmas: Love Actually – 16 December 2017
Love Actually is one of those Christmas movies that you can watch over and over again. It’s a fun, romantic comedy. One of the really fun parts of the movie is the old rock singer – Billy Mack who tries to relaunch his career by revamping an old classic. He records a Christmas variation of The Troggs‘ classic hit “Love Is All Around“. Although he thinks the record is terrible, Mack promotes the release in the hope it will become the Christmas number one single.
Nine intertwined stories examine the complexities of the one emotion that connects us all: love. Among the characters explored are David (Hugh Grant), the handsome newly elected British prime minister who falls for a young junior staffer (Martine McCutcheon), Sarah (Laura Linney), a graphic designer whose devotion to her mentally ill brother complicates her love life, and Harry (Alan Rickman), a married man tempted by his attractive new secretary. Fun facts: Emma Thompson had a hard time not laughing whilst filming the scene where she holds up two Barbie dolls for her daughter’s friends Christmas presents. That’s because the dolls weren’t Barbie, but Ken dolls dressed in drag.
