A Modern Retelling

The new film will follow 18-year-old Anastasia, played by Deva Cassel, as she arrives in Paris, eager to join the prestigious Opéra Garnier as a ballet dancer. She quickly becomes entangled in a web of mystery when she encounters the Phantom, portrayed by Julien De Saint Jean. Meanwhile, the ambitious artistic director James Figueras, played by Romain Duris, is leading a grand production of Orpheus, a mythical opera based on the Greek legend of Orpheus and Eurydice.

The stakes rise when the production’s prima ballerina, set to play Eurydice, narrowly escapes death, forcing Anastasia into the spotlight. As she steps into the lead role, her connection with the enigmatic Phantom deepens, resulting in an intense and impossible love story.

Filming at the Iconic Palais Garnier

Filming will take place at the legendary Palais Garnier opera house in Paris, known for its historical significance and its underground subterranean lake, often associated with Phantom lore. The film’s use of real locations will add an immersive, atmospheric depth to the reimagining.

The First French-Language Phantom

This marks the first-ever French-language feature adaptation of Leroux’s novel, a major milestone given that the story is a staple of French literature. The film is set apart from other recent adaptations, including Kenny Ortega’s YA-focused reimagining for Disney+, which is also in development.

A New Generation’s Phantom

For over a century, The Phantom of the Opera has captivated audiences through literature, film, and stage, most famously through Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Broadway musical, which ended its historic 35-year run in April 2023. With this contemporary version, the filmmakers hope to introduce the timeless tale to a new generation, blending classic storytelling with modern themes of romance, ambition, and dark intrigue.

The release date is expected to be in 2026, though an official date has yet to be announced. With its blend of classic Gothic elements and modern cinematic sensibilities, this adaptation is set to be a thrilling new chapter in the Phantom legacy.
